What is the impact of snoring on health?

Snoring (commonly known as “snoring”) is a widespread sleep phenomenon, many people think it is commonplace and do not take it seriously, and there are even people who see snoring as a sign of a good night’s sleep. As the saying goes: one person snores, the whole family suffers! The snorer is often complained about, and every day the people around him can’t sleep at night, but the snorer himself sleeps very well? The fact is not true, many snorers have poor sleep quality, although they snore like thunder every night, they are still listless and exhausted during the day. Why do you snore? Snoring is caused by the vibration of the soft tissues around the airway when the airflow passes through the narrow part of the upper airway at high speed during the breathing process. The main reason for the obstruction of the airway during sleep is the retraction of the jaw, the soft palate and the backward fall of the tongue. This “snoring” sound can sometimes be as high as 80 decibels, no less than the noise of a car on a busy street. Is snoring a disease? Several studies have shown that snoring is an enemy of health and can lead to a series of sleep-related breathing disorders, the most common of which is obstructive sleep apnea hypoventilation syndrome (OSAHS). In light cases, it makes snorers have dry mouth, dry throat, sore throat, drowsiness and fatigue during the day, and in heavy cases, it can even cause respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular accidents, and even sudden death in sleep. What kind of people are susceptible to OSAHS? OSAHS mostly occurs in older, obese people. 60% to 90% of OSAHS patients exhibit obesity, weighing more than 20&#xFF05 of the standard body weight; or more, with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25. Obese people suffer from narrowing of the upper airway and inadequate lung ventilation due to overly plump neck tissue and fatty deposits in the pharynx. In terms of health, the elderly are a “disaster-prone” group. Malignant snoring is just like “adding stones to the well”, making their condition “worse” and more stubborn and difficult to cure. How to cure snoring? The main methods of treatment are respirator (CPAP), palatopharyngeal surgery and oral appliance. At present, oral orthodontic appliances are the most widely used internationally and have good effect on mild, moderate and some severe OSAHS patients (but patients with severe tooth loss, periodontal disease and temporomandibular joint disease should be used with caution). The oral appliance is mainly used to reduce or disappear the local narrowing of the upper airway during sleep by changing the position of the jaw and tongue root, so as to achieve the purpose of unobstructed airflow, reduced apnea, improved oxygen saturation, and lower or disappeared snoring, and it is easy to make, portable, safe and non-invasive, with good efficacy and low cost. The All Army Oral Disease Clinic now carries out the project of making oral appliances for patients. After the appliance is in place in the mouth, it drives the lower jaw and tongue root to be in a forward position, thus expanding the linguopharyngeal airway, increasing the ventilation, and obviously improving the snoring and breath-holding during sleep.
