Acupuncture originated in China, spread to Korea and Japan around the 6th century A.D., and then went from Asia to the world during the continuous development in the past thousand years. It is now recognized by UNESCO as one of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The world has turned from curiosity to recognition of acupuncture and has created a wave of enthusiasm for study and research. The National Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specializes in the study of “non-Western mainstream medicine”, including Chinese medicine and acupuncture, of which acupuncture is one of the most popular studies. This time, María-Trinidad Herrero Ezquerro, Vice President of the University of Jaime I School of Medicine, Spain, took time out of his busy schedule to have a brief exchange and discussion with our acupuncture department and to establish cooperation, also because of his enthusiasm for Chinese traditional acupuncture. Due to the special nature of outpatient work, it was not possible for all physicians to attend the meeting, so Director Hai Rhihan led four physicians from the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, namely Dr. Zhaobeming, Zhang Wen, Zhou Danfeng and Yang Liansheng, to have a meeting with Professor María in the conference room on the 20th floor of the General Building. Professor María briefly introduced the current situation of acupuncture in Spain, and some Spanish physicians who are qualified in acupuncture choose to study acupuncture to obtain a license and carry out acupuncture treatment. Professor María has a deep knowledge and research background in neuroscience and hopes to establish cooperation in the near future in research on the relationship between acupuncture and neuroscience and the mechanism of acupuncture’s action. She is also going to study acupuncture at an acupuncture school in Malaysia because of the language connection. The meeting came to a perfect end with a cordial atmosphere. At the end of the meeting, Prof. Harihan expressed his gratitude for Prof. María’s visit and his hopes for collaborative research, as well as his best wishes for Prof. María’s upcoming trip to China. As the saying goes, the fragrance of apricot blossoms in deep lanes, acupuncture is rooted in the apricot forest and is also a treasure of the world.
