How to treat secretory otitis media with effusion in children

Treatment for secretory otitis media with effusion in children includes: medication, Eustachian tube blowing, surgery, and treatment for the cause.
Children’s Eustachian tube is relatively flat and short compared to adults. Factors such as Eustachian tube obstruction, localized infection of the middle ear, and metamorphosis can lead to Eustachian tube dysfunction, which can cause negative pressure and exudation in the middle ear cavity, resulting in the formation of secretory otitis media, and the ear symptoms are mainly dominated by hearing loss, stuffy ears, and blockage.
1. Drug treatment: in the acute stage, penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics can be used for anti-infection treatment; use nasal spray glucocorticoid, such as mometasone furoate nasal spray; nasal decongestant, such as 0.05% ephedrine solution; keep the nasal cavity and the Eustachian tube unobstructed. Promote the mucus movement of pro-excretory agents, such as eucalyptus-pin enteric soft capsule treatment; if necessary, prednisone short-term oral.
2. Eustachian tube blowing: in chronic stage, pinching nose and puffing method and Boche ball method can be used to blow the eustachian tube, together with tympanic membrane massage to open the eustachian tube and promote the drainage of effusion.
3. Surgical treatment: tympanic membrane puncture and aspiration of fluid in the tympanic cavity, or injection of glucocorticosteroids, such as dexamethasone, into the tympanic cavity after aspiration. When the fluid is sticky and difficult to pump, perform tympanotomy and suction out the fluid in the tympanic cavity. Or tympanic tube can be placed to improve ventilation and drainage.
4. Treatment for the cause: active treatment of nasal cavity and nasopharyngeal diseases, standardized treatment of rhinitis, sinusitis, adenoidectomy.
If children with secretory otitis media, tympanic effusion, it is recommended to consult the hospital and follow the doctor’s instructions to standardize the use of drugs and treatment.
