According to statistics, about 20% of pregnant moms experience itchy skin. Itchy skin during pregnancy is common in the middle and late stages of pregnancy. The degree of severity varies, most of them are itching on the abdominal wall, and some of them will have itching on the limbs or other parts of the body; some have rashes, some don’t, and some are just reddened palms of the hands or soles of the feet. Itching is actually very uncomfortable, so itching punishment has been criminalized as early as the Han Dynasty in China. For pregnant mothers, what are the causes of itching? What harm does itching do to pregnant mothers and fetuses? And what should we do about it? The common causes are as follows: increased estrogen levels; dry skin; overstretching of the skin on the abdominal wall (e.g., twin births); intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP); gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and diabetes mellitus combined with pregnancy; pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP); and herpes gestationis (HG). What can we pregnant moms do when itchy skin occurs? First of all, we must seek help from the doctor to clarify the cause of itching and intervene (because some causes of itching such as ICP, untimely treatment may even jeopardize the safety of the pregnant mother and the fetus baby) Itching due to the increase in oestrogen level, dry skin and excessive stretching of the skin of the abdominal wall, the symptom is not very serious, and it does not have a serious impact on the pregnant mother and the fetus baby, and can be relieved by paying attention to the care and maintenance in daily life. The symptoms are usually not severe and do not have serious effects on the pregnant mother and the fetus. The following are some basic measures: 1, keep the skin clean and hygienic; 2, avoid too high a water temperature, too long, too many times when bathing; 3, the use of mild bath products; 4, the best skin care products without fragrances; 5, to avoid excessive heat and ultraviolet radiation; 6, wear loose cotton clothing; 7, diligently tanning quilts, wash underwear and bed linen; 8, to avoid spicy and stimulating food. These basic precautions to operate is not difficult, in addition to these, we have to have a rough impression of these common diseases that cause itching: First, intrahepatic cholestasis in pregnancy (ICP) Characteristics: Itching usually starts from the palms of the palms of the feet and feet, and gradually extends to the limbs, and even develops to the face. The skin often has no visible rash, but there are scratches. The degree of itching varies, being mild during the day and severe at night. And it can be relieved quickly after delivery. Effects: ICP may have adverse effects on both the mother and the baby, and may lead to hypoxia, preterm labor, and severe stillbirth. The pregnant mother is prone to postpartum hemorrhage. Treatment: It is necessary for the doctor to make a clear diagnosis, use drugs to lower bile acids, closely monitor the baby’s condition in the uterus, and terminate the pregnancy at the right time. Second, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and diabetes mellitus combined pregnancy When the pregnant mother’s blood glucose control is not satisfactory and the lesions involve small blood vessels, the peripheral nerve endings are prone to inflammation, resulting in abnormal sensation in the hands and feet, itchy skin; poor microvascular circulation leads to poor local cell function; high sugar in the blood, which is prone to allow the growth of fungal invasion of infected skin. Impact: Pregnant mothers are prone to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, excessive amniotic fluid, ketoacidosis, obstructed labor, birth canal damage, and increased chances of surgical delivery. The baby is prone to macrosomia, fetal growth restriction, fetal malformation, increased probability of preterm delivery, higher risk of postnatal respiratory distress syndrome, hypoglycemia, erythrocytosis, hyperbilirubinemia, etc. 。。。。。。 Treatment: Under the guidance of the doctor to control blood sugar, still need to do a good job of daily care precautions. Third, pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) Characteristics: first appeared in the abdomen, the umbilical cord around the stretch marks, can be developed to the chest, thighs, upper limbs, face, palms, feet rare, itchy, seriously affecting sleep and rest. Initially, there are several edematous red papules with a diameter of 1 to 2 mm, and some of them appear as papules, which may later fuse into urticarial plaques and involve most of the skin of the abdomen, and disappear after delivery. EFFECTS: No comorbidities in pregnant mother and fetus. Treatment: Topical antipruritic and glucocorticoid creams can be used topically, and antihistamines can be taken internally, and the medication should be prescribed by a doctor. Herpes gestationis (HG) Characteristics: This is an autoimmune disease that often appears on the extremities, especially the hands and feet. It may involve the anterior surface of the trunk, the head and face, and rarely the mucous membranes of the oral and genital tract. The rash is polymorphic: red urticaria-like plaques, papules, blisters, and macules. There is a severe burning sensation or itching, causing the pregnant mother to be restless. It subsides spontaneously in the weeks or months after delivery, but can recur with another pregnancy. Effects: Usually the fetus does not cause the disease in the womb, but blisters may develop on the skin after birth. Treatment: Oral hormones and antihistamines may be given, but the medication must be prescribed by a doctor. There are many causes of itchy skin during pregnancy, in addition to the common conditions listed here there are pruritic folliculitis of pregnancy, pustules and so on. What pregnant mothers need to do is to seek the help of their doctors to find the cause and prescribe the right medication.
