Continuous blood purification therapy (CBP) also known as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT): is a general term for all therapeutic modalities that involve continuous, slow removal of water and solutes. It has the following advantages: (1) stable hemodynamic characteristics; (2) continuous and stable control of azotemia and electrolyte and water-salt metabolism; (3) continuous removal of circulating toxins and intermediate molecules; and (4) provision of nutrition and drug therapy as needed. The indications include severe acute kidney injury (ARF) with hemodynamic instability or continuous removal of excess water and toxic substances due to various causes, chronic renal failure (CRF) combined with acute pulmonary edema, uremic encephalopathy, heart failure, hemodynamic instability, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), septicemia or septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) , acute severe pancreatitis, hepatic encephalopathy, drug or toxic poisoning, severe water, electrolyte and acid-base imbalance, hyperthermia heat stroke, crush syndrome, severe fluid retention requiring massive fluid replacement and nutritional support, etc. CRRT can effectively remove small and medium-sized molecules of toxins and metabolites from the blood, correct disorders of water-electrolyte and acid-base balance, provide nutritional and metabolic support, and effectively control body temperature, while maintaining a stable hemodynamic state with good results, which greatly improves the success rate of resuscitation in critically ill patients.
