Low platelets in cirrhosis?

When cirrhosis progresses to the decompensated stage, platelets will appear to decrease, and the possible causes are impaired liver function, hypersplenism, and so on. Cirrhosis is mostly caused by hepatitis B virus infection, alcohol, etc., which leads to the emergence of diffuse fibrosis and regenerative nodules in liver tissue. According to the progression of the disease, cirrhosis can be categorized into compensated and decompensated stages. Compensated stage usually has hepatitis manifestations, or symptoms may be hidden, accompanied by mild fatigue, abdominal distension, mild jaundice and other symptoms; loss of compensated stage appears wasting, bleeding tendency, hypoproteinemia, ascites, pleural fluid and so on. Cirrhosis in the decompensated stage may be due to impaired liver function, resulting in thrombocytopenia due to impaired synthesis of thrombopoietin; in addition, due to cirrhosis of liver tissues, high pressure occurs in the portal vein, which in turn leads to splenic hyperfunction and increased destruction of platelets; at the same time, the hepatitis virus may also have a destructive effect on the hematopoietic system in the bone marrow, resulting in thrombocytopenia. Cirrhosis, it is recommended to go to the regular hospital in time, timely treatment, so as not to delay the condition.
