Simple homocysteine high is usually asymptomatic. Homocysteine is a metabolite of cystine and methionine, and hyperhomocysteinemia can be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, especially coronary heart disease and stroke disease. Some patients with hypertension have a combination of elevated homocysteine levels, called H-type hypertension, and this type of hypertension is more likely to develop coronary heart disease as well as cerebrovascular disease. A high homocysteine level indicates a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, homocysteine needs to be aggressively lowered. Supplementation with vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folic acid can lower plasma homocysteine levels. The key to treating hyperhomocysteinemia is to adjust the diet and eat more green leafy vegetables.
