Phellodendron Bark has the effect of clearing heat and drying dampness (removing heat and drying dampness), diarrhea and detoxification (removing fire and toxicity in the body), etc. It is used as a main treatment for damp-heat leucorrhoea (leucorrhoea caused by damp-heat evil), feverish drenching (burning and stinging pain in urination, accompanied by urinary urgency, discomfort in the abdomen), astringency, damp-heat diarrhea (diarrhea caused by damp-heat evil), jaundice, impotence, eczema, and itching, etc. It is mainly used in the form of decoction and boiling. Chinese medicines work mainly through decoction, and boiling water for sitz bath may affect the efficacy because of the limited release and absorption of the active ingredients. Adverse effects of Phellodendron Bark are not known. The product is bitter cold and injurious to the stomach, and is contraindicated in people with spleen and stomach deficiency (weak and cold spleen and stomach). If symptoms occur, it should be used under the guidance of a doctor.
