How to cure cough with acupuncture

Acupuncture treatment of cough is based on different typology and identification of evidence. The broad classification of coughs can be divided into external coughs and internal coughs. External coughs are mainly caused by wind-cold, wind-heat, or wind-dry evil attacking the lung health, which leads to a loss of lung suction and lung qi rebellion, resulting in a cough. For the wind-cold type, moxibustion can be added; for the wind-heat type, blood can be released from the large spine and Quchi; for the wind-dry type, blood can also be released locally. Therefore, cupping and bloodletting are the main treatments for external coughs. For internal coughs, different methods are used depending on the evidence. For internal coughs with phlegm and dampness, in addition to local cupping, milli-needle acupuncture can be used to remove phlegm and dampness at Yinlingquan and Fenglong; for coughs caused by deficiency of the spleen and kidneys, moxibustion can be added to Lung Yu and Kidney Yu on the back, and Guan Yuan, Qi Hai and Shen Que on the abdomen; while milli-needle acupuncture is mainly used for patients with deficiency of the liver and kidneys.
