The “big funnel” in front of the chest flattened the heart and lungs

The “big funnel” in front of the chest flattened the heart and lungs when the 19-year-old college boy suddenly couldn’t breathe when running. The 19-year-old Lanxi boy, Xiao Wang, was born with a funnel chest, not only afraid to wear an undershirt throughout the year, but also recently participated in sports events, suddenly out of breath. The first hospital thoracic surgery, the sunken sternum actually flattened the heart and two lungs. The sun is hot in the month of September, but Xiao Wang, a college student from Lanxi, is in unusual distress. It turns out that his chest is different from others since he was born with a huge “pit” in front of his chest, like a funnel. ”I wanted to wear less clothes to take advantage of the cool, but because of the body deformity, I never dare to wear a tank top, and do not go to public bathrooms or pools to shower, swim.” What is this disease? Xiao Wang went to the hospital, the doctor said it is funnel chest. In contrast to “chicken chest”, this disease is formed by the sternum along with both sides of the rib cartilage sunken inward. The company’s main business is to provide a wide range of products and services to its customers. “Recently, when I participated in sports at school, I suddenly felt out of breath, which is why I thought of coming to see a doctor.” He observed carefully that the young man looked handsome, but the deformity of the thorax made him droop shyly, with his shoulders tilted forward and hunched back. After taking the film, Dr. Feng sucked in a breath of cold air, Xiao Wang’s heart had been completely flattened by the sternum. On the chest film, the distance from the front edge of the back spine to the depression of the back edge of the sternum was less than the width of three fingers. Xiao Wang’s chest was a severe funnel chest. The company’s main goal is to provide a solution to the problem of the problem. ”The normal human heart is about the size of a fist, and there is room in the chest cavity so that the heart beats without any restriction. And your chest gap can no longer accommodate the heart, resulting in pressure on the heart and both lungs, which affects the heart and lung function, and makes you shortness of breath when you move.” Dr. Feng’s explanation finally made Xiao Wang determined to have surgery. In traditional funnel chest surgery, a large opening is made to separate the pectoral muscles on both sides, cut off the sternum and remove the excess ribs on both sides, then flip the sternum and fix it with steel pins.  However, this time, Dr. Feng used a new method. During the surgery, a 2 to 4 cm incision was made on both sides of Wang’s chest wall, and another incision of about 1 cm was made on the right side of the chest wall to place the thoracoscope. Under its supervision, a curved steel plate was delivered to the back of the depressed sternum, and the depressed sternum was lifted by flipping it 180 degrees. After waking up from anesthesia, Xiao Wang saw that the “big funnel” in his chest for many years had finally disappeared and revealed a long-awaited smile. The best time to correct the problem is at the age of 12. Why did Xiao Wang get a funnel chest? Dr. Feng explained that funnel chest is a congenital familial disease, more common in men than women, the ratio of men to women is about 4:1, is a companion dominant genetic. The incidence of funnel chest is 2.5% for those with a family history, while the incidence of funnel chest is only 1% for those without a family history. Funnel chest is a progressive lesion that may exist at birth and is a common congenital developmental anomaly in children, a thoracic deformity caused by the backward depression of the sternum during the child’s growth and development. However, it is often discovered by parents only after a few months or even years when it becomes more and more obvious. ”The appearance of funnel chest is characterized by a sunken anterior chest, anteriorly extended shoulders, a slightly hunched back and a protruding upper abdomen. As the sternum is sunken backwards, it compresses the heart and lungs, resulting in a child with poorer lung capacity than their peers, easier respiratory tract infections and poor exercise tolerance, which seriously affects growth and development.” Dr. Feng said that because of this deformity, many people are ashamed to expose their front chests from a young age, with high psychological pressure and individual children even forming withdrawn personalities. ”Younger mild funnel chest, the impact on the child’s respiratory circulation is not significant, it is possible to correct itself with growth and development. However, moderate and severe funnel chests should be actively corrected through surgery to relieve the compression of the heart and lungs by the sunken sternum. In addition to improving the appearance, it also helps to improve the child’s tolerance and mobility and relieve the child’s psychological stress.” Dr. Feng especially reminded that children who have funnel chest need to grasp the timing of surgery, with the best age for surgery being between 6 and 12 years old. “At too old an age, the bone is already calcified and the plate needs to be left in place for a longer period of time, which can have a detrimental effect on post-operative recovery and long-term results.”
