What is Major’s syndrome?

Meigesyndrome was first described by HeuryMeige (1910) in France and is also known as idiopathic blepharospasm-oral mandibular dystonia syndrome, characterized by bilateral eyelid spasms and/or symmetrical irregular spastic contractions of the orofacial muscles. It is mostly seen in middle-aged and elderly people, with an average age of onset of 50 years and a male-to-female ratio of 1:2 to 3. It is rare in those with onset before the age of 30. Rarely, dystonia can extend to adjacent body parts, forming segmental dystonia, and more rarely, it can extend to generalized dystonia, and there are several dystonia syndromes with certain characteristics. For focal or segmental dystonia, or for localized areas with particularly severe symptoms in generalized dystonia, local injection of refined botulinum toxin A is the treatment of choice. The dose must be highly individualized and the treatment must be repeated every 3-6 months, and the injections should be performed by an experienced physician.
