What does it mean when the cervix is not smooth?

A less smooth cervix means that there may be celiac-like changes on the surface of the cervix, or cyst-like changes seen on the surface of the cervix. Neither celiac disease nor cysts are synonymous with disease. Celiac disease is only a clinical sign and it can be either a physiological change or a pathological change. Cervical erosion is mostly a physiological ectopic columnar epithelium, which means that the squamocolumnar junction is displaced under the influence of high estrogen and the columnar epithelium in the cervical canal covers the outer surface of the cervix, resulting in a granular erosion-like change on the outer surface of the cervix, which is not a synonym for disease. Cervical cysts are also physiological changes of the cervix in the vast majority of cases and are not necessarily a disease. They are mainly caused by the replacement of the columnar epithelium by squamous epithelium in the transformation zone of the cervix, where the new squamous epithelium covers the glandular opening of the cervical canal or penetrates deeper into the glandular opening, blocking it and causing obstruction of the drainage and retention of glandular secretions and forming cysts. For the less smooth surface of the cervix, no special treatment is usually needed and only cervical cancer screening is required. If there is no problem with cervical cancer screening, regular annual review is all that is needed. If cervical cancer screening reveals suspicious, cervical biopsy under colposcopy is necessary to clarify the presence of cervical lesions.
