The duration of febuxostat administration is long term and continuous, depending on the patient’s uric acid level, and there is no exact course of treatment. Febuxostat is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor and can be used for the long-term treatment of hyperuricemia with gout symptoms. Patients are advised to start with the smallest dose and gradually increase the dose according to the uric acid profile. The dose can be gradually reduced once the uric acid has decreased to the desired value and gradually use the lowest dose to control the uric acid to the normal target level. Patients may experience an increase in gout attacks when they start febuxostat, mainly due to the decrease in serum uric acid levels leading to deposition of urate activity. Patients need not worry about this and can take NSAIDs or colchicine at the same time to prevent gout attacks at the beginning of treatment. In addition to medication, gout patients should try to reduce the intake of purine-rich foods, such as animal offal, seafood and various kinds of alcohol in their daily lives; in addition to this, they should drink more water to promote the excretion of uric acid salts.
