The brainstem is the centre of life and brainstem haemorrhage is rapid in onset and progression. The severity of the condition and prognosis are closely related to the volume and location of the haemorrhage.
Patients with a bleeding volume of >5ml have a high mortality rate; those with a bleeding volume of <5ml have milder clinical symptoms, fewer complications and a lower mortality rate.
In the case of small focal haemorrhages on one side of the primary midbrain, the symptoms present are generally milder and the prognosis is relatively good.
