It is unlikely that osteophytes cause hip pain. Although lumbar spine osteophytes can compress nerves, they are not as harmful as lumbar disc herniation and can hardly cause serious sciatica, therefore, they usually do not cause hip pain, but mainly symptoms of lumbar pain. The correlation between osteophytes in other parts of the body and the presence of hip pain is even smaller.
