A dermatomal rash in the ear canal and around the ear with pain is considered to be possible ear herpes zoster. The disease is caused by a virus that invades the nerves and causes more intense ear pain. In addition to herpes in the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane, a small number of cases may be associated with facial paralysis and sensorineural deafness.
