Dry socket is self-limiting and self-healing, and the pain can theoretically be relieved after a week without treatment. However, dry socket can be extremely painful for the patient and the severe pain can affect the patient’s daily life and diet.
The prognosis for dry socket is good, but the possibility of chronic infection of the alveolar bone and deep tissue infection cannot be ruled out, and treatment will greatly relieve the pain and reduce the likelihood of progression to complications.
Therefore, it is recommended to seek immediate medical attention once dry socket is detected and it is not recommended to tolerate the pain until it heals on its own.
