Brain death is death. A study of 73 patients with clinically confirmed brain death showed that the vast majority (97%) of patients eventually went into cardiac arrest within 1 week, despite adequate respiratory support. In addition, there are occasional reports of “brain dead people surviving for more than a month or even a year”, most likely because these patients have not fully met the criteria for brain death.
