It is normal to have a bowel movement of less than three times a day, but if you have more than three bowel movements in a day, you have diarrhoea. Patients with diarrhoea have thin, watery stools that are more than 200g per day, or contain undigested food or pus, blood or mucus.
To determine whether diarrhoea is present, it is important to take into account both the number of bowel movements and the texture of the stool. Symptoms such as thin stools, abdominal pain and discomfort require active treatment.
