The initial diagnosis can be made on the basis of the patient’s history, such as symptoms of throat discomfort, sore throat or difficulty swallowing, combined with a laryngoscopy. Alternatively, the diagnosis can be confirmed by aspiration of milky white or brown mucus with a thick, long needle syringe.
