How tongue cancer is usually treated

Treatment should be individualised according to the patient’s tumour stage. For the management of primary foci, radiotherapy, simple surgical resection or cryotherapy can be considered for early stage highly differentiated tongue cancer; for advanced stage, comprehensive treatment, i.e. “radiotherapy + surgery” or “chemotherapy + surgery + radiotherapy” should be adopted. For the management of metastases, due to the high rate of cervical lymph node metastasis in tongue cancer, selective cervical lymph node dissection should be considered at the same time, except for stage T1.
