What causes nail pain and swelling in the finger

Nail fungus is most often caused by infection with pathogenic bacteria after a tiny puncture wound, contusion, barb (reverse stripping) or cutting the nail too deeply. The tissue structure of the finger is dense and the infection results in high tension within the tissue and pressure on the nerve endings, hence the swelling and pain.
