There are many causes of tongue pain, which may be caused by trauma, fire, oral inflammation, or tongue disease. Common causes include recurrent mouth ulcers, burning mouth syndrome, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, and oral candidiasis. Painful trauma to the tongue tissue due to residual crowns and roots or sharp tooth edges and poor restorations is more common in middle-aged and elderly patients with tongue pain.
