Many diseases can cause swollen lymph nodes behind the ear, the most common being infectious diseases such as lymphadenitis, otitis media, gingivitis, mumps and tonsillitis.
In addition, other non-infectious diseases such as lymphoma, leukaemia, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, systemic lupus erythematosus and nodular disease should also be ruled out to avoid delaying treatment.
