A cracked tongue is generally a benign sign if there are no other uncomfortable symptoms and does not require treatment. To prevent the accumulation of food debris and bacteria in the furrow that can cause bad breath, gently brush the tongue with a soft-bristled toothbrush after meals and before bedtime. If other discomfort is present, treatment of systemic diseases such as gastritis, cholecystitis, diabetes mellitus, vitamin B2 deficiency, and syphilitic linguitis should be treated as a priority. When these diseases improve the symptoms of cracked tongue are likely to disappear.
