How to tell a mole from a spot

The difference between nevus and spot mainly includes pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and treatment modalities.
1. Causes: nevus is a benign skin tumor formed by melanocytes gathering into nests; spots include chloasma, freckles and other different types of spots, but freckles and chloasma are dominated by the increase of melanin particles in the basal cells, and there is no change in the formation of cells into nests.
2. Clinical manifestations: moles can occur in different parts of the body such as trunk and limbs, and are usually distributed independently. They can be flat or elevated structures, and their color may be brown, black or blue. The color may be brown, black or blue, while freckles and melasma are found on the cheeks, and melasma may be fused into pieces, which are flush with the surrounding skin without elevation or depression.
3. Treatment: Moles generally do not need special treatment; if they affect the appearance, they can be removed by laser treatment, and if they have the tendency of malignant transformation, they have to be surgically removed; spots can be treated with medication (e.g. hydroquinone drugs) and laser according to the specific type.
Moles and spots are recommended to be treated after clear diagnosis in order to avoid delaying the condition.
