Community-acquired pneumonia is pneumonia that occurs as a result of microbial infection in a community setting, i.e. outside the hospital, and includes pneumonia that develops after infection outside the hospital, while still in the incubation period, and after hospitalisation for other reasons.
Hospital-acquired pneumonia, defined as pneumonia that does not receive invasive mechanical ventilation during the patient’s hospital stay, is not in the incubation period of pathogenic infection and develops newly in the hospital more than 48 hours after admission, including pneumonia that develops within 48 hours of discharge from hospital when the infection was acquired in the hospital.
