The cause of acute bacterial (septic) arthritis can be ruled out first, with a predominant bias towards joint injury due to chronic disease being considered, with care taken to rule out metabolic bone disease, bone and joint tumours, allergic reactions and autoimmune and metabolic disorders causing painful enlarged joints.
