Most cases of nail dystrophy can be cured after the cause is removed. However, if the nail matrix has been completely destroyed by disease or trauma, the nail plate condition cannot be restored, e.g. after flat nail moss leading to pterygium-like changes, or after a tumour has attacked the nail matrix.
