In clinical practice, the measured intra-bladder pressure (UBP) is generally used to respond to intra-abdominal pressure.
It is measured as follows.
1. a Foley catheter is placed with the patient lying flat and relaxed, a fixed bladder is filled with water and the drainage tube is clamped shut.
2. Approximately 25 ml of saline is injected by puncture at the puncture port to ensure that the catheter is filled with fluid.
3. A thick 18G needle is inserted through the puncture port and a pressure transducer is attached to the other end of the needle.
4. The pressure transducer is fixed in the mid-axillary line, zeroed and the pressure value is read by ensuring that the patient is lying flat and the abdomen is completely relaxed.
