Following a compression fracture of the lumbar spine, there is a loss of intervertebral foraminal height and the compressed vertebral body and herniated disc may produce irritation of the nerve roots, resulting in numbness in the feet. Especially when standing, the weight of the limb is transmitted to the compressed and unstable vertebrae, leading to increased nerve root irritation and symptoms.
