Swollen gums are mostly caused by gum disease or periodontitis, and can also be triggered by systemic diseases such as leukaemia and diabetes. Gum disease and periodontitis are in turn caused by poor oral hygiene and plaque buildup in the patient resulting in localised gum inflammation and swelling and pain.
Patients are advised to consult the dentistry department for relevant tests to confirm the cause of the disease.
