Brain haemorrhage is bleeding from blood vessels within the brain or on the surface of the brain. Brainstem haemorrhage is a type of brain haemorrhage, where a blood vessel located in the brainstem area bleeds. Brainstem haemorrhages are relatively rare, accounting for about 10% of brain haemorrhages.
The vast majority of brainstem haemorrhages are located in the pons, occasionally in the midbrain, and even more rarely in the medulla oblongata. Brainstem haemorrhage is characterised by its rapid onset, seriousness, poor prognosis and high mortality.
