Ultrasound descriptions of fibroids include the following: 1. Irregular enlargement of the uterus, not a normal round or oval surface, but a localized protrusion. 2. single or multiple hypoechoic nodules if there are fibroids. 3. intrauterine echogenic changes, such as hypoechogenicity in the uterus, which is lower than the normal myometrial echo. 4. growth of fibroids. The location of the fibroids is usually described as subplasma fibroids are located outside the uterine cavity; interstitial fibroids are between the uterine walls; submucosal fibroids are next to the endometrium and inside the uterine cavity; and there may be broad ligament fibroids outside the uterine cavity, or red or cystic fibroids may occur. In some cases, MRI may be required for identification.
