Children may need surgery for congenital cataracts and traumatic cataracts, but children’s cataract surgery has its own peculiarities and is not a replica of adult cataract surgery. The timing of cataract surgery for children varies greatly according to the degree of cataract, especially when the degree of cataract is not very serious.
2. The way of cataract surgery for children is different from that for adults, because children have softer cataracts and are prone to grow cataracts again after surgery (i.e. posterior cataracts), and the surgical methods are mostly cataract aspiration and anterior vitreous cutting.
Even if implantation is done, it is difficult to decide when and what type and degree of IOL to choose.
4. There are many complications after cataract surgery in children, such as posterior cataract, iris adhesion, IOL deviation, secondary glaucoma, etc. The incidence is much higher than that of adult cataract surgery. Therefore, postoperative review is more frequent than that of adults.
5. Children are in the growth and development period, and the perfect development of the visual system after cataract surgery depends on post-operative training (regular adjustment of prescription and amblyopia training by experts in strabismus and amblyopia), which is crucial.
In order to achieve a good prognosis for children after cataract surgery, parents, medical workers and children themselves need to make a lot of efforts.
