What is hepatomegaly in young children?

The liver is an important blood-producing organ during fetal life and stops producing blood after birth. Hepatomegaly can occur in young children when they are moderately anaemic or have severe infectious diseases where the liver compensates for blood production.
Young children may also have hepatomegaly due to malnutrition, flaccid abdominal muscles and prolapsed viscera, and should seek medical advice from a regular hospital when hepatomegaly is detected.
