Although the disease is acute, it is self-healing, with symptoms disappearing on their own after a few days. The majority of patients will recover after symptomatic and supportive treatment. The elderly, children and people with underlying illnesses are prone to dehydration, acid-base toxicity and electrolyte disturbances, which can take a little longer to treat, but can be restored to health with timely treatment.
