How to manage daily life in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee

“Establish a sensible routine, such as protecting the affected knee joint, avoiding long and tiring walks, climbing hills, going up and down high stairs, and various poor postures (prolonged standing, kneeling and squatting, etc.).
Obese people should reduce their weight: being overweight increases the burden on the joints, so try to maintain a standard weight.
Protect the joints by wearing joint protectors such as knee pads, avoiding high heels, wearing soft, flexible “sports shoes”, using suitable insoles and wedge insoles for medial compartment arthritis.
Reduce the load on the affected joint during flare-ups and use a walking stick or walker to assist with mobility.
Exercise the muscles of the joint: (1) aerobic exercise: walking, swimming, cycling, etc. help to maintain joint function; (2) moderate exercises such as taijiquan and baduanjin; (3) flexion and extension of the knee joint under non-weight-bearing conditions to maintain joint mobility; (4) exercises for the relevant muscles or muscle groups to strengthen the muscles and increase joint stability, e.g. quadriceps isometric stretching exercises for the lower limbs.”
