What are the components of vaginal discharge?

Vaginal discharge is often referred to as “leucorrhoea” in Chinese medicine because of its normal white color. Vaginal discharge is composed of liquid and solid components. The liquid is mainly mucus from the cervix and the mucus secreted by the vaginal epithelium, while the solid components are mainly cells shed from the vagina, white blood cells and bacteria in the vagina (mainly normal flora such as Lactobacillus). These shed cells have a metabolic effect, which allows for the timely excretion of dead bacteria and a small amount of pathogenic bacteria, thus playing a “self-cleaning” role. Vaginal secretions also lubricate the vaginal walls and keep the vagina at the right pH level, both of which are also mechanisms of vaginal resistance to disease. Older people have less leukorrhea and their vaginal self-cleaning mechanism is weakened, which makes them vulnerable to age-related vaginitis.
