Trigeminal neuralgia refers to the transient recurrent severe pain within the distribution area of the trigeminal nerve (ophthalmic branch, maxillary branch and mandibular branch), with the maxillary branch and mandibular branch being the most common. The distribution of each branch of the trigeminal nerve is as follows: 1. The maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerve is distributed in the skin between the eye and the cleft of the mouth, the upper lip, the maxillary teeth and gums, the hard and soft palate, the anterior part of the tonsillar fossa, the nasal cavity, the maxillary sinus and the nasopharyngeal mucosa. 2.The mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve is located in the skin between the auriculotemporal region and the fissure of the mouth, the teeth and gums of the mandible, the first 2/3 of the tongue, the mucosa of the floor of the mouth, the external auditory canal and the tympanic membrane. The ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve is located in the anterior part of the skull, forehead, dorsum of the nose, skin of the upper eyelids, upper part of the nasal cavity, cornea and conjunctiva. Trigeminal neuralgia is a recurrent pain that involves the above distribution areas. Trigeminal neuralgia is more common in adults and the elderly, with 70-80% of patients over 40 years of age and more women than men. The attack is characterized by severe electric shock-like, pinprick-like, knife-like or tearing pain in the upper and lower jaws of the cheek and tongue, lasting for several seconds or 1-2 minutes, with sudden onset and stop, and completely normal intervals. The corners of the patient’s mouth, nose, cheeks or tongue are sensitive areas and can be triggered by light touch, called trigger points or trigger points. The patient’s pain is cyclic, with episodes ranging from days, weeks or months, with periods of remission as normal. As the disease progresses, the number of attacks gradually increases, the duration of attacks is prolonged, the interval is shortened, and even the attacks are persistent. In summary, trigeminal neuralgia is a recurrent severe pain in the distribution area of the trigeminal nerve mentioned above, and patients can go to neurology for timely treatment.
