Basic knowledge of orthodontics

Depending on the condition, the time required for each individual varies somewhat: i. Most people take about two years for orthodontic treatment. For simpler cases, such as mild malocclusion with no bony problems, it may take a year to a year and a half to complete. Second, two-phase treatment, that is, functional orthodontic treatment plus fixed orthodontic treatment (suitable for some children with bony problems, such as jaw recession), the two phases add up to about three years. Third, if the patient has more serious problems, such as unconventional tooth extraction (such as the extraction of the back molar due to tooth decay), the presence of lockjaw in the posterior region (a serious bad bite in the posterior region), will also make the treatment time longer. Fourth, orthodontic plus orthognathic surgery treatment is divided into three steps: preoperative orthodontic, surgical, and postoperative orthodontic. Among them, surgery takes about two weeks of inpatient treatment. The total time required for the three steps is about one and a half to two years. It is important to note that the patient’s cooperation is very important. Patients who are cooperative can usually finish the treatment as planned, while those who are not cooperative tend to make the treatment time longer.
