Uterus can be preserved with interventional treatment for adenomyosis

Adenomyosis is the presence of endometrial glands and mesenchyme in the myometrium, accompanied by compensatory hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the surrounding myometrial cells. It bleeds every time as menstruation, but cannot be excreted like menstruation, instead it accumulates in the myometrium and collects more and more. The cause of this disease is still unclear. Most scholars believe that it is related to genetics, injuries such as curettage and cesarean delivery, hyperestrogenemia, and viral infections. The main symptoms are increased menstrual flow and prolonged periods, as well as progressive dysmenorrhea that gradually increases. Gynecologic examination may reveal a uniformly enlarged or nodular bulge of the uterus. There are no effective drugs for the treatment of this disease. The usual surgical treatment is total hysterectomy, and focal resection is feasible for young patients with fertility requirements, but it is prone to recurrence after surgery. Interventional therapy is performed by embolization of the uterine artery, which can reduce the size of the lesion, make the dysmenorrhea disappear or significantly shorten and reduce it, and normalize the menstrual period and the menstrual volume. It is suitable for patients of any age, has no effect on fertility, and preserves the uterus. It has the advantages of quick effect, less recurrence, small wound (0.3cm) and quick recovery, which is the most ideal treatment method except for hysterectomy at present.
