Lateral collateral ligament injuries, we have many joints throughout the body that have lateral collateral ligaments, the most common being lateral collateral ligament injuries of the knee or lateral collateral ligament injuries of the ankle. For lateral collateral ligament injuries in the ankle, we need to immobilize the ankle in a brace, prohibit walking and weight bearing, and generally, immobilization for at least 4-6 weeks to allow sufficient time for the ligament injury to repair. If there is a more serious injury, such as a rupture of the lateral collateral ligament and loss of continuity, surgery should be performed to rebuild the integrity of the lateral collateral ligament, followed by functional exercises to restore the function of the joint.
