When a baby develops itchy labia minora, you first need to rule out infantile vulvovaginitis. Infants and young children are prone to vulvovaginal secondary infections due to thin vulvar skin mucosa, low estrogen levels and vaginal foreign bodies, and are commonly seen in infants and young children under 5 years of age. The main manifestation is itching of the vulva, which can lead to crying, irritability or scratching of the vulva with the hands.
The itching may also be caused by a recent lack of attention to vulva cleanliness.
