Don’t give up on treatment of severe corneal ulcers

There are about two million patients with corneal blindness in China, of which infectious corneal ulcers are the main cause. Infectious corneal ulcers are divided into: bacterial corneal ulcers, fungal corneal ulcers, viral corneal ulcers, echinocococcosis corneal ulcers and so on. The main manifestations of corneal ulcers are: eye redness, white ulceration of the black eye, rapid loss of vision, and in severe cases, corneal perforation. Many patients give up treatment after examination and find that the corneal ulcer involves the whole cornea or has perforated, and ask the doctor to remove their eyes, not knowing that there are many corneal ulcers that can be saved by corneal transplantation to restore some of their eyesight. If a corneal ulcer does not lead to intraocular inflammation, most eyes can be saved with a corneal transplant. Once treatment is abandoned and the affected eye is removed, the quality of life of monocular patients is significantly reduced, and they are vulnerable to trauma due to the reduced visual field in one eye and the lack of stereo vision. Therefore, patients suffering from severe corneal ulcers are advised not to give up treatment easily.
