How is deafness treated?

Deafness, medically known as hearing impairment. At present, there are more than 20 million people with simple hearing disability in China, and the incidence of congenital double deafness in newborns is 0.1 to 0.3%. Moreover, many patients are congenitally deaf. With the increase of age, the proportion of patients with hearing impairment increases significantly, 1/8 for people over 50 years old, up to 1/3 for elderly people over 65 years old, and 70% of elderly people over 70 years old have hearing impairment, which seriously affects the social interaction and quality of life of patients. Currently, technically speaking, the problem of hearing impairment has been solved, thanks to the invention of various auditory implant devices. In the United States, Australia and Austria, very good quality auditory implant devices have been developed to meet the requirements of people with moderate to severe hearing impairment. The main ones are: electronic cochlear implant devices, which can perfectly solve severe congenital and acquired cochlear deafness and have been carried out in 30,000 cases in China. Especially for pediatric and post-speech deaf patients from 2 to 4 years old, they can obtain completely normal hearing and speech functions and get the same life as normal. The current cost of imported cochlear implantation is 290,000 to 110,000, and if it is included in the reimbursement of major diseases or medical insurance or rural cooperative medical care, the financial burden of the patient’s family will be greatly reduced. In the long run, the one-time investment can solve the later investment brought for the hearing impairment problem, for example, for the government, the early treatment of deafness, after adulthood, there is no need for the low insurance investment specifically for deaf patients, and currently China provides free About 2,000 cases of free cochlear implant surgery are provided for deaf children. In recent years, domestic cochlear implants have also been put on the market with satisfactory results, at a price of about 60,000 to 80,000 yuan. For patients with residual hearing who cannot be satisfied by wearing ordinary hearing aids, they can choose vibrating sound bridge, vibrating bone bridge, bone anchored hearing aids, semi-implantable hearing aids, etc. All of them can obtain almost normal hearing, and the cost generally ranges from 120,000 to 50,000 yuan, which has been spread in our mainland, and even the most advanced MAXUM implantable hearing aids, which will land in our country at present. In addition, for post cochlear deafness, auditory brainstem implantation (ABI), which implants a chip into the auditory center of the brainstem, can enable patients to gain hearing, and is currently being carried out in Hong Kong, China. These devices require surgical installation by a specialized otolaryngologist. In conclusion, relying on these auditory implant technologies basically solves the problem of deafness, but since all such devices are developed abroad, they are very expensive. With the help of the government or health insurance, more hearing impaired people could have access to these high-end auditory solutions.
