The combination of severe anaemia during pregnancy increases the risk of developing gestational hypertension, premature rupture of membranes, puerperal infections and postnatal depression for pregnant women; for fetuses and newborns, it can increase the risk of fetal growth restriction, fetal hypoxia, reduced amniotic fluid, stillbirth, stillbirth, premature birth, neonatal asphyxia and neonatal ischaemic-anoxic encephalopathy.
