Is scaling harmful to my teeth?

When I see patients in the clinic or at the clinic, I often see patients with a lot of calculus and tell them that they need to have their teeth scaled, but many of them say: Isn’t scaling harmful to the teeth? Other people say: they used to feel that there is not too much calculus, but after a scaling, they feel that there is more calculus. In fact, these views are completely wrong. Calculus is a kind of calcified plaque and soft tartar deposited on the surface of the teeth, formed by the calcium component in the saliva gradually, and it is not easy to remove after it is formed. Calculus is most often found inside the lower incisors, and bad brushing is more common inside the lower back teeth and outside the upper back teeth. Calculus can induce periodontal disease, so it should be scaled regularly and in a timely manner. Some people think that dental calculus will still appear after scaling, so they should not be scaled. In fact, the production of dental calculus is inevitable, just like clothes will be dirty, will we stop washing clothes because they will be dirty? Scaling only removes the calculus on the surface of the teeth, and the ultrasonic scaling head only leaves some microscopic scratches on the surface of the teeth, which will not cause any harm to the teeth at all. So the worry that scaling is bad for your teeth is not necessary at all. So, why do some people say that they felt less calculus before, but after a scaling, they feel more calculus instead? In fact, the rate of calculus production is constant with or without scaling, but when the teeth are not scaled, the calculus is only deposited on the original surface of the calculus, so individuals do not feel the change; after scaling, the surface of the teeth is clean, and then the calculus is deposited again, so it will be relatively more obvious. Some people think that the teeth are not loose before scaling, but loose after scaling, which is also a misunderstanding. This is common in the following cases: the patient has serious periodontal disease, the roots of the teeth are exposed a lot, and the teeth are loose, but the calculus is like a rope that connects the loose teeth together, so they don’t look very loose, once the teeth are scaled, the calculus is gone, the teeth are separated from each other, and the teeth look much looser. This is really the idea of putting the cart before the horse. It is because of poor oral hygiene and a lot of calculus that causes periodontal disease and loose teeth. And you can’t say that you have to rely on the fixation of calculus to keep your teeth from loosening. Regular dental cleaning at the hospital’s dental department is an important measure of dental care. Usually, once a year is more appropriate, but it also depends on your own situation. In addition, because the gums usually bleed when scaling, the disinfection measures for scaling must be good, and the possibility of cross-infection with hepatitis B and AIDS due to scaling exists.
