How to treat croup

General croup is commonly associated with bronchial asthma, pulmonary edema, pneumothorax aspiration injury, emphysema, chemical pneumonia, bronchopulmonary cancer, etc. It is caused by bronchospasm and airway constriction. The general treatment focuses on helping the patient to relax and treating the symptoms. Humidified oxygen is given through a mask, and deep, slow breathing is encouraged. If necessary, emergency equipment such as endotracheal tubes are available to provide intermittent positive pressure ventilation and nebulized inhalation. Bronchodilators, establish intravenous access for administration of medications such as diuretics, steroids, bronchodilators, and sedatives. If the airway is obstructed, abdominal breathing compressions can be performed to target the etiology of the disease.
