When can I go to work after ACL reconstruction?

How long should I wear the brace? When will I be able to walk normally? When will I be able to exercise? These are all questions that are of great concern to patients after ACL reconstruction. Today we will clarify these time points. First, after ACL reconstruction patients go home with a brace, which is generally recommended to be worn for 3 months. After 6 weeks, if the patient sleeps “honestly”, he or she can sleep without the brace, even when going to the toilet or walking around at home, but must wear the brace when walking around until 3 months after surgery. Many patients are concerned about the loss of brace protection and whether the knee joint will be easily injured. If the thigh muscles do not recover well within 3 months after surgery, there is a real possibility of ligament damage from an accidental sprain. However, the muscle is our best “support”, and it and the ligament are dynamic and complementary in maintaining the stability of the joint. Even after the current cruciate ligament reconstruction, the ligament can only recover to the original 90 points, and the remaining 10 points need to rely on muscle strength to compensate. In short, active postoperative muscle strength exercise is more reliable than any external brace. Second, after ACL reconstruction, it is a gradual recovery process from stepping on the ground to taking off the crutches. On the first day after surgery, the patient can go down with crutches, at this time, he can only point his toes to the ground, and then gradually transition to stepping on the ground with the whole foot; by 2-3 weeks after surgery, the patient can consider taking off the crutches. In addition, it is worth noting that if the ACL reconstruction is combined with meniscus injury and the meniscus is sutured during surgery, or if it is combined with cartilage injury and microfracture surgery is done, it is recommended that these patients should consider de crutching 6-8 weeks after surgery. Finally, 1 month after ACL reconstruction, the patient can basically live a normal life, including starting to work, after evaluation by the surgeon. By the time the patient is 3 months postoperative, he or she can start exercising, but only the three types of exercises, jogging, swimming and cycling, and other exercises should be considered six months postoperatively. Exercise six months after surgery, such as playing ball, is also limited to playing by oneself. If a rivalry game is needed, it is recommended to do so after 10-12 months after surgery, when the doctor thinks that a good recovery has been made. By the time you are 1-2 years post-operative, basically any sport can be played, even athletes can play on the field.
